Days of Our Lives (DOOL) spoilers reveal that the soap world has lost a major player. Nick Benedict has died at the age of 77 due to emergency spinal surgery complications, so fans of his work are mourning the loss.
Longtime soap fans might remember Benedict from his time playing Phil Brent on All My Children in the 1970s.
Phil was one of Erica Kane’s (Susan Lucci) husbands – and Benedict won a Daytime Emmy for the role in ’79 shortly after he wrapped up his run.
The Young and the Restless fans may also recall Nick Benedict from his stint playing Michael Scott in 1981, but Days viewers know him best as Curtis Reed since he played on DOOL from 1993 to 2001.
Kate Roberts Brady (Lauren Koslow) was married to Curtis, who was abusive and ran off with their kids after she cheated on him.
Curtis was the criminal father of Austin Reed (Austin Peck) and Billie Reed (Lisa Rinna), so he made an impact on many storylines before Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) took him down.
Benedict earned plenty of praise for his role as this complicated Days baddie, but he was also featured on Santa Barbara, Knots Landing, The Dukes of Hazzard, Hawaii Five-O and more.
The former Y&R and DOOL star had emergency spiral cord surgery on July 2, but he was admitted to hospice just two days later.
Benedict passed away in Arizona nearly two weeks later due to complications, so this is certainly a sad loss.
The soap alum is survived by his wife, Ginger, who was married to Benedict for 22 years.
Our hearts go out to all Benedict’s loved ones as they deal with this difficult blow.
It’s always tough to get updates on fatal news like this, but Nick Benedict’s memory will live on through the unforgettable roles that made a mark on the soap world and beyond.
