In anticipation of the upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductions on Saturday, Oct. 19, Dave Matthews sat down with radio host Ari Fink on SiriusXM’s Dave Matthews Band Radio. During the segment, Matthews discussed being in the class of 2024 and detailed his dream Induction Ceremony introduction. He later joked about winning the fan vote in the past and expressed gratitude towards his supportive fan community.

Replying to Fink’s question about who he might select to induct DMB into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alive or dead, Matthews said dead, then stopped to ponder his selection. After lingering over the possibility of having his late father do the honors, Matthews decided to opt for someone “edgy,” naming Frank Zappa as his pick. Matthews explained his decision by stating that he “grew up loving Frank Zappa and his fear of the decline of America.” For this reason, he elaborated, it would “be fun to hear what terrible shit he would say” about the institution in general, and Fink agreed, adding that Zappa might “light the room and all the people on fire.”

Later, Matthews explained that the “best thing” about having the Induction Ceremony on the horizon is the irony of winning the fan vote. Referring to his original glimpse of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-hood, Matthews explained that the first time around, Dave Matthews Band won the fan vote and received a nomination but did not get inducted. This year, though the band won the fan vote once again, they are set to be inducted. Matthews joked that “it would almost have been sweeter” if they failed to receive the induction as a testament to the fans’ love.

Referring to the band’s longevity, Matthews earnestly stated that it does feel quite “nice to be collectively acknowledged” as a longstanding group by fans and fellow musicians. Closing the segment, he thanked his fans, attributing much of the band’s success to having enthusiastic supporters. “That’s what it’s all about,” Matthews concluded, “is the gratitude to the fans.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be broadcast live on Disney+ at 7:00 p.m. ET and remain available on the streaming platform afterward. ABC’s primetime highlight reel will go live the next day on Hulu and Disney+. Additional performers/presenters will be announced as the October event nears, with more information available at rockhall.com.
