Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country and Relix have announced the late August release of a special red vinyl edition of the band’s impending studio effort, Horizons, their second set of all original music. The impending 15-track collection of songs maintains the four-piece’s capacity to blend modes of country, rock, bluegrass, funk, and psychedelia to produce their unique brand of cosmic country, characterized by the improvisational heat administered by bandleader Donato. The newly unveiled pressing is limited to 500 copies and sold exclusively through relix.shop.
Horizons, the Relix variant, represents Donato’s fourth total vinyl release, and second time taking this approach to releasing a studio album, after previously partnering with us to drop an exclusive 2-LP Relix red version of his sophomore album. The newly announced pressing extends Donato’s commitment to a steadfast listening experience, tied to his team’s masterful exchange, and Vance Powell’s (White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Chris Stapleton, Trey Anastasio) co-producer credit.
The impending 15-track collection showcases the band’s sonic growth in association with their road dog status, tied to testing material in front of a live audience before putting it on tape. Horizon produces an arc that takes listeners on an ascent via roots-dominated tracks “Sunshine in the Rain” and “Blame Train” before leveling out and slowing the tempo for “Better Deal Blues,” “Along the Trail,” and “Another Dimension.” The group flexes its ability to deliver an instrumental conversation on “Hangman’s Reel,” before a push of funk on “Prairie Spin.” “Chore” elicits their capacity to experiment before finding an exit after LP closer, “Down Bedford.”
According to Donato, Horizons aims to reflect on the meaning of human experience. “I wanted the lyrics to be easy to understand, not abstract,” he says. “There are many layers to the meanings and you think about it, but it’s not rocket science to understand them. Trying to maintain a human sound and faith in what humans can do really inform the actual sonics and production of the record, too.”
