'Past Lives' writer-director Celine Song video interview

A24 on Tuesday released the trailer for Materialists, writer-director Celine Song’s follow-up to her 2023 indie romantic drama Past Lives, which earned an Oscar Best Picture nomination and Song a nomination for her original screenplay.

Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal star in Materialists, a romantic comedy. It is set to hit theaters June 13, 2025.

Johnson plays an ambitious, successful professional New York City matchmaker named Lucy who finds herself torn between two men — one a wealthy perfect match (Pascal) who Lucy calls “a unicorn, an impossible fantasy,” and the other her imperfect ex (Evans), a struggling actor-waiter who she runs into again catering one of her fancy events.

The movie hit the scene in the fall at the American Film Market, where it was among the most in-demand projects thanks to buzz around Song and the cast that was circling at the time. Sony ended up acquiring multiple international territories from A24 in a reported eight-figure deal.

Past Lives producers Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler of Killer Films and 2AM’s David Hinojosa are behind Materialists, which Song also produces.
