Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is undoubtedly one of the greatest wuxia films ever made and perhaps one of the best movies of the 21st century. From its many poignant themes to its innovative take on fight scenes, it is a story full of powerful characters, drama, heart, and love. Twenty-five years after its release, we are getting a new take on this story. Prime Video is developing a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon series.

The story of Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two warriors who grapple with forbidden love as they parse through embracing tradition or leaning towards modern thought, is a classic. And who didn’t love Jen Yu, the strong-willed daughter who leaves a wealthy life and an arranged marriage behind to live wild and free? The film’s unique approach to depicting martial arts became incredibly popular among US audiences.

Sony Pictures

Deadline reports that Jason Ning (The Brothers Sun) and Ron Moore (For All Mankind) will executive produce this series and presumably be its showrunners. At this time, it doesn’t seem that Ang Lee, who directed the original film, will be a part of the TV series. But that could change in the near future.

Of course, everything is in very early stages so it will be a while before casting details come into focus. But it is exciting to see how Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon can expand in a series format on Prime Video. The original movie itself is based on the Crane-Iron Pentalogy book series by Wang Dulu, so surely there are other aspects of those novels to explore. Most importantly, we need a Michelle Yeoh cameo because she’s the queen of everything. Please and thank you.
