‘Count Your Days’: Costco Shopper Buys Kirkland Signature Organic Free-Range Eggs. Then She Checks The Bottom Of A Shell

Between skyrocketing prices and a lingering bird flu outbreak, eggs have become something of a luxury. So when a Costco shopper cracked a Kirkland egg open only to discover something hiding inside the shell, it didn’t take long for the video to blow up.

TikTok creator Paola Heredia (@gracedlavishly) recently shared a video that has left some viewers swearing off eggs for good.

In it, she shows the inside of a cracked Kirkland Signature Organic Free-Range egg, while the plastic two-dozen Costco egg carton sits in the background.

A Disturbing Discovery Inside A Kirkland Egg

As she zooms in on the broken shell, viewers can clearly see what looks like a long, curled worm nestled at the very bottom.

“Not a whole roundworm in my eggs,” she captioned the clip. Overlaid text on the video added, “Costco count your days.”

Heredia’s video has racked up more than 325,000 views since Saturday.

How Does A Worm Even Get Inside An Egg?

As shocking as the video might be, experts say it’s technically possible—though thankfully rare.

According to The Poultry Site, this kind of thing usually happens when a hen already has a roundworm infection. These are parasites that live in the bird’s intestines.

In some cases, the worms can actually migrate through the cloaca and into the oviduct, where the egg forms. If that happens, the worm can get sealed inside the egg as it’s developing.

There are ways farmers try to prevent this. Keeping chickens off wet or dirty ground, disinfecting their coops regularly, and feeding them a proper diet all play a role. Wire flooring and scheduled deworming also help reduce the risk.

Still, free-range hens—like the kind that lay organic eggs—might be slightly more at risk. According to the Queensland Government, chickens that roam and scratch around outside are more likely to come into contact with parasites in the soil.

Commenters Don’t Fully Have Her Back

The commenters under her video were divided, though most people didn’t seem to think Costco was at fault.

“How was Costco supposed to know roundworm was in the eggs?” one person asked.

Another chimed in with a possible explanation.

“Well you bought organic? So that means no pesticides and stuff,” they wrote. “That’s part of the risk.”

Others were just straight-up horrified.

“You know what I’m just gonna stop eating,” one person said.

“You just unlocked a new fear! I didn’t know this could happen,” someone else wrote.
