Colorado Trail Cam Captures Hundreds Of Prairie Rattlesnake

prairie rattlesnakes emerging from hibernation in Colorado on live trail cam

In Colorado, Spring has officially sprung. The popular prairie rattlesnake trail camera from Project RattleCam has been teeming with action and captured hundreds of prairie rattlesnakes emerging from hibernation on their live stream this week.

It isn’t just prairie rattlesnakes emerging from the hibernation cave either, there are plenty of garter snakes intertwined with the rattlers. In fact, some of those garter snakes are even using the larger prairie rattlesnakes for warmth:

While that photo is cool, the marathon 11-hour, 44-minute, and 23-second live stream yesterday from the Project RattleCam YouTube channel features literally hundreds of prairie rattlesnakes emerging from hibernation. It is hard to say for certain where in the video the best action is, because there is a lot of incredible footage, but I have set the video to start at the 5-hour and 16-minute mark where a whole gaggle of rattlesnakes are slithering about:

Project RattleCam is a very cool project and one which has been featured here on BroBible before. Last Summer, the trail camera picked up interesting behavior from the prairie rattlesnakes during/after a hail storm.

It wasn’t until this video that I had ever pondered what snakes do during a hailstorm. But it came as no surprise that snakes, like us, seek shelter during hail storms. They also emerge after the storm has passed to drink the hail as it melts:

The trail cam in Colorado is constantly filming a ‘Super Den’ but the actual location is undisclosed. This is to protect the snakes from would-be poachers looking to make a belt or curious hikers who might want to catch a glimpse of the rattlesnakes and get too close.

However, for those who want to learn more about these prairie rattlesnakes they have linked to a very helpful landing page with all sort of information on this Colorado rattlesnake species.
