Colman Domingo opened up about the inspiration behind his 2024 Met Gala look, which he says was a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley.
Domingo was among many celebrities who walked up the steps of The Met to celebrate the new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” This year’s gala theme was “The Garde of Time,” and Domingo wore a cape that extended from his jacket and paired it with wide-legged pants.
“They both wore capes when they were at the Met,” Colman told E! at the event. “Everything I do, I feel like it’s gotta be for the culture. It’s gotta be more than just for me.”
He continued, “I wanted to honor these brothers who were here before me as well.”
The Rustin actor honored the Black Panther star and the late Vogue journalist at the Met Gala. Colman’s suit was designed by Willy Chavarría and kept on theme carrying a bouquet of lilies.
“I’ve never met Cardi B and I’m really gagging,” Colman said of who he was excited to meet at the event. “I think I might just expire right there at the table.”
Boseman died in August 2020 at the age of 43 after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Leon Talley, who was a staple at the Met Gala for many years, died on January 2022.
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event that raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s co-chairs included Anna Wintour, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya.
