Colin Farrell has risen to the top of the food chain in the new teaser trailer for Max’s The Penguin, an upcoming spinoff series set in the universe of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Watch the clip below.
In The Batman, Farrell’s The Penguin served as a lieutenant to Gotham City criminal kingpin Carmine Falcone. Following Falcone’s demise in the film, The Penguin looks to fill the void.
The teaser features Farrell giving a speech about his motivation for becoming a gangster, as he recalls a bigshot from his neighborhood named Rex Calabrese. “He was a big deal,” The Penguin says. “He helped people. If he saw you on the street, he’d call out to you. When I’m 14 or somethin’, he has a heart attack and dies, still holdin’ a cigar.”
He continues by remembering the respect shown for Calabrese after his death: “In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor. A friggin’ parade. And it wasn’t fancy, but it was the gesture. The show of love, of what he meant.”
Debuting this fall on Max, the eight-episode series was created by showrunner Lauren LeFranc, who also serves as executive producer with Reeves and Farrell. Additional cast members include Cristin Milioti as Carmine Falcone’s daughter Sofia alongside Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen.
The Penguin will have to tide over audiences who have been eagerly anticipating The Batman Part II, which was recently pushed back to October 2nd, 2026.
