Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY Is the First Film Shot Entirely with IMAX Film Cameras

Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY Is the First Film Shot Entirely with IMAX Film Cameras_1

One of the coolest aspects about cinema is the many ways that a film can be shot. These days, there are people making entire short films using an iPhone, which is fun and a great tool for indie and amateur filmmakers. And there are major and experienced filmmakers who use a variety of formats to make their big screen masterpieces come to life. Directing legend Christopher Nolan’s next big epic, The Odyssey, will be epic indeed because it is the first film shot with 70mm IMAX film cameras.

Now, we have to make a note about this distinction, specifically the word film. Many films, including the last two Avengers movies were shot with IMAX digital, not film, cameras. Ryan Coolger’s Sinners is shot on 65mm IMAX film cameras as well as in Ultra Panavision 70.

So, this distinction of The Odyssey being the first shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film cameras is the truth. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond revealed this during the Cannes Film Festival.

“Chris called me up and said, ‘If you can figure out how to solve the problems, I will make [Odyssey] 100 percent in Imax.’ And that’s what we’re doing,” Gelfond said. “He forced us to rethink that side of our business, our film recorders, our film cameras.”

Guessing Roles for Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY Cast: Who Plays Who in the Movie?

The cast for this film is just as epic as its format. It includes Robert Pattison, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton. We cannot wait to see if our above casting predictions are right or not.

We cannot wait to see what The Odyssey looks like when it hits theaters on July 17, 2026.
