The production of Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated epic film The Odyssey has been accused of “brutal repression.” The accusations stem from the fact that the film is reportedly filming in a portion of the Western Sahara that’s occupied by Morocco.

According to the Western Sahara International Film Festival (FiSahara), Morocco is engaging in the “repression” of the Sahrawi people, who occupy the territory that The Odyssey has been filming in.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon in the lead role of of Odysseus Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Circe, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, and Lupita Nyong’o as Clytemnestra.

“Nolan and his team, perhaps unwittingly, are contributing to Morocco’s repression of the Sahrawi people and to the Moroccan regime’s efforts to normalize its occupation of Western Sahara,” the director of the Western Sahara International Film Festival said.

“We’re sure that if they understood the full implications of filming a high-profile movie in a territory whose Indigenous peoples are unable to make their own films about their stories under occupation, Nolan and his team would be horrified,” the statement continues.

“Morocco routinely touts Sahrawi cultural expressions as uniquely Moroccan. They created a film festival in Dakhla to counter ours, and produce high-budget films that portray Western Sahara as part of Morocco. However, Sahrawis trying to make films about their lives are persecuted and must work clandestinely and at great risk to themselves and their families.”

Additional cast members also include Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, Michael Vlamis, Iddo Goldberg, Josh Stewart, Ryan Hurst, Anthony Molinari, and Logan Marshall-Green.

The Odyssey — which put tickets for its IMAX showings on sale a year ahead of time and immediately sold them out — is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.

To celebrate the release of The Odyssey, IMAX will be rereleasing eight of the acclaimed director’s films for brief theatrical runs: Interstellar and Inception from Aug 20-25, Batman Begins from Aug 22-24, Oppenheimer from August 22-27, The Dark Knight from August 23-25, The Dark Knight Rises from August 24-26, Dunkirk from August 26-28, and Tenet from August 27-28.
