Christopher Nolan, the man who has directed films such as The Dark Knight and Interstellar, is perhaps at the peak of his powers these days following his Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer, which also almost grossed $1 billion despite being an R-rated biopic.
So when you’re a director like Christopher Nolan, what comes next after you’ve done it all and then some? First, you sign Matt Damon as your star, as was reported earlier this month. If Damon does star in Nolan’s next film, it’ll be the third time they’ve collaborated following Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
Then, you make a spy movie, which rumors indicate will be the genre that Nolan tackles in his next film. Film fans have been clamoring for Nolan to make a spy movie, specifically by hopping into the James Bond franchise, which obviously never happened.
“What Nolan’s film will be remains a mystery. It won’t be The Prisoner, a project that has a long history at Universal and once was developed as a vehicle for the director. Sources say Nolan’s latest isn’t another sci-fi epic; some speculate that it may be in the espionage genre. That’s not a surprise given that Nolan flirted with making a Bond film at one point.” [via Variety]
Dated to release on July 17, 2026 — a weekend that Nolan has long released his movies — his upcoming project will be his second film to be set up at Universal Pictures following Oppenheimer.
While Warner Bros. reportedly tried to woo Nolan back to the studio (where he made The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk, and many of his iconic films) with a 7-figure check (that he accepted), Nolan ultimately decided to make his next film with Universal.
