Christopher Nolan is gearing up to begin production on his follow-up to his Best Picture-winning film Oppenheimer, as both Matt Damon and Tom Holland have signed on to star in his upcoming feature, set to release in July 2026.

While nothing is official at this time, a listing in Production Weekly seems to confirm rumors that Christopher Nolan’s next project is going to be inspired by the 1983 helicopter-focused action film Blue Thunder.

Filed under “Untitled Nolan Universal Project,” Nolan’s next film will reportedly be about “a pair of aerial helicopter cops, with an older mentor and younger lead.” Given the casting of Damon and Holland, it’s clear those are the two roles they’ll be playing.

Nolan’s upcoming film will mark his third collaboration with Matt Damon following 2014’s Interstellar and 2023’s Oppenheimer. It’ll be the acclaimed director’s first time working with Tom Holland, which is being seen as a coup casting for the young actor considering his difficulty in finding success outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Released in 1983, Blue Thunder was directed by Saturday Night Fever filmmaker John Badham, and starred Roy Scheider, Warren Oates, Candy Clark, Daniel Stern, Malcolm McDowell, Paul Roebling, David Sheiner, Joe Santos, Jason Bernard, and Robin Braxton.
