Leave it to Christopher Nolan to put a whole new spin (he famously loves a twist, after all) on the term “Nepo Baby.”
Yes, while the acclaimed 52-year-old director did cast his daughter Flora in Oppenheimer, not only was it not in a lead role, but it was also as a character that doesn’t even have a name.
According to IMDB, Nolan’s daughter Flora is playing a character named “Burn Victim”, which is described as a “young woman who appears to the title character in a hellish, conscience-pricking vision, in which the flesh is flayed from her face by a piercing white light.”
As for why The Dark Knight and Interstellar director decided to cast his own daughter in such a particularly gruesome part, his reasoning was predictably Nolan-esque.
“We needed someone to do that small part of a somewhat experimental and spontaneous sequence. So it was wonderful to just have her sort of roll with it,” Nolan said during a recent interview with The Telegraph.
“But yes, I mean, gosh, you’re not wrong. Truthfully, I try not to analyze my own intentions. But the point is that if you create the ultimate destructive power it will also destroy those who are near and dear to you. So I suppose this was my way of expressing that in what, to me, were the strongest possible terms.”
Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy in the lead role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, otherwise known as the “father of the atomic bomb.” Alongside Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, and Florence Pugh also feature in starring roles.
Additional Oppenheimer cast members include Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Kenneth Branagh, and more. The film will hit movie theaters in the United States on Friday, July 21, which is famously the same day that Barbie will also be released.
