Christopher Mintz-Plasse, best known as McLovin from Superbad, has had an unpredictable career. He has starred in cult comedies, voiced animated characters, and plays bass in the funk band MainMan with musician Ben Kweller, which originally debuted on Funny Or Die in 2017.

Mintz-Plasse is also a big tattoo guy. One of his most memorable tattoos comes from a psychedelic trip in the desert, where he discovered Carlos Santana’s Abraxas and felt compelled to make it permanent.

On The Perfect Parfait, an yogurt-based YouTube talk show hosted by Los Angeles comedian Hunter Cope, Mintz-Plasse explained how he discovered Abraxas while tripping on mushrooms under the moonlight.

The story about Mintz-Plasse’s Santna-inspired tattoo happens at the 8:02 mark of the show. Here’s a clip from the show’s Instagram:

“I was on a bunch of mushrooms in the desert with my fiancée, and they had a record player and a bunch of records,” Mintz-Plasse recalled. “And I was like, I’m gonna pick a record that I’d never heard before, seen before, and we’re just gonna listen to it while tripping balls. And I pulled out this psychedelic cover for a vinyl, and I had no idea it was Santana’s Abraxas, which is like a very famous record from 1970 or something, right? I didn’t know. I just liked the cover, and I put it on, and it was one of the greatest records I’ve ever heard. And we were just under the moonlight, eyes rolled in the back of our heads, listening to this psychedelic dream music. I was like, ‘What is this?’ And I looked and it was Santana.”

The experience stayed with him, leading to a tattoo. “And this chick was on the cover of the record. This hot girl with a nice butt, right? Yeah, she’s trying to conga drum. And I was like, ‘One day I’m gonna get that tattooed.’”

Abraxas, released in 1970, is one of Santana’s most famous albums. It blends Latin rock, jazz, blues, and psychedelia. Songs like “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va” became classics. The album cover, created by artist Mati Klarwein, features religious and mystical imagery, including the figure that Mintz-Plasse now has tattooed on his body.

Mintz-Plasse sees his tattoos as meaningful. “My favorite tattoo? The next one, brother.”

At one point in the interview, the conversation turned to live music. Mintz-Plasse has been to countless concerts over the years, but when asked how many, he laughed. “That’s the best question I’ve ever heard. How many live shows you think I’ve been to over the years? That I remember? Oh, that I remember.”

Good answer.

If Abraxas had this kind of impact, there is no telling what might happen if he comes across A Love Supreme on vinyl while out in the woods.

Or a Phish or King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard show, in real life.

On the Boston Celtics, live music

Mintz-Plasse is a dedicated Boston Celtics fan. He named his all-time starters. “I would go Bird. Yeah. Bill Russell. And Kevin McHale.”

Mintz-Plasse’s episode of The Perfect Parfait follows a growing lineup of comedic and candid interviews, including Dave Franco, Paul Walter Hauser, and Tim Heidecker. The show, hosted by Hunter Cope, blends talk-show banter with absurd culinary creations, all served up poolside in what Cope calls The Parfait Palace.

Each guest receives a parfait inspired by their creative persona, curated by Chef David Codney, formerly of The Peninsula Beverly Hills. For Mintz-Plasse, this meant a dessert dubbed ‘The Duality of Man,’ a nod to his career in both comedy and music.

Before Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco took the hot seat in the show’s debut on YouTube, discussing everything from roleplaying to favorite fast food joints.
