Surreal footage of an avalanche in China has gone viral with the video being filmed by tourists who get clobbered by the approaching avalanche. Instead of running as they saw it approaching, they stood there and waited until it got really, really close before ducking behind a building.
Ultimately, things could have been worse for everyone but this video serves as a helpful reminder that if you see an approaching avalanche then you should get out of the way.
The incident occurred on Meili Snow Mountain in the remote region of Yunnan, China, not too far from the border of Myanmar (née Burma). The Meili are a subrange of the Hengduan Mountain range and the Lora Zangui Gonbu peak is the main peak of the range, maxing out at 5,229m or 17,155ft, which would make it the 4th tallest mountain in the United States if it was here…
Anyway, this video has gone viral after the avalanche which took place less than a week ago after the video was widely shared on the Chinese social network Weibo.
Over on TikTok, the top comment really sums it up. Someone wrote “those have to be the worst survival skills I’ve ever seen in my life.” Someone else chimed in with “even I was about to start running” while another person opined “I guess, once you’ve seen Godzilla, nothing scares you.”
Truly, why didn’t anyone say ‘we should run!’ long before the avalanche approached them? Why were they all just lallygagging around until it was quite literally right on top of them?
Sure, most people on planet earth will never experience an avalanche. That’s a fact. But most people are at least smart enough to know that if they see one coming they should seek shelter and/or get out of the way.
