Cher finally joined the ranks of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees on Saturday night as a member of the class of 2024.
After years of failing to receive even a nomination for the Rock Hall, the legendary singer expressed disinterest in a possible induction as recently as last year “I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars,” she commented during an interview on the Kelly Clarkson Show in 2023. “I’m not kidding you. I was about to say something else — I was about to say I’m not shitting you. I’m never changing my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”
Upon her induction on Saturday, however, Cher took a more conciliatory tone. Aside from joking that was “easier to divorce two men” than get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” the singer used her acceptance speech to share her story of resilience and thank her mother for believing in her and pushing her to never give up.
Cher was inducted by Zendaya, who said “[Cher’s] name is just as legendary as her legacy… Her voice is so singular that any song she sings becomes a Cher song. She’s navigated a multitude of musical genres, defined new ones and reinvented others.” She also took the stage to perform “Believe” alongside Dua Lipa.
Next month, Cher will publish the first part of her memoir.
