Despite a lot of creative shakeups behind the scenes, including scrapping several episodes and creating an entirely new first episode after the Writer’s Guild Strikes, Daredevil: Born Again mostly delivered. After 7 years away from our TV screens, Charlie Cox and company slipped back into their old roles with ease, and created a series worthy of the original. But there was one episode of Born Again that Charlie Cox didn’t care much for, and he’s now gone on record as saying so. In an interview with The Playlist (via Variety), we learned that the actor really disliked episode 5, “With Interest.” This episode focused on Matt Murdock trapped in a bank during a robbery. This was the only episode that survived intact from before Marvel creatively retooled the show. Here’s what he had to say:
I dunno if this is of interest, but I will say this amongst all of this, there was one episode we didn’t change at all. It’s the episode in the bank, and that was part of the original [shoot]. We shot that before the strike. That was part of the original [draft], and just for my money, I wasn’t into it. That feels like a 1970s game. Too much technology these days for that to work. And also, I didn’t think the actual device used for the theft was sophisticated enough.
Disney+ might have also thought this episode wasn’t up to snuff, because they dropped it the same night as episode 6 of the series, which most fans agree was stronger. As it turns out, it wasn’t as unpopular as Cox thought it would be. He added “I really pushed back, and yet I hear from so many people that they love that episode. So, it just goes to show you just don’t know. It’s so subjective. Everyone’s taste is different. Internally, when they do their ratings, it’s one of the highest-rated Disney shows that they’ve had.” This episode is the one that features Ms. Marvel’s father, so maybe Charlie Cox disliked tying into another MCU property. The old Daredevil show almost never did that and lived in its own bubble. In any event, it’s safe to say this one episode didn’t make or break the season as a whole.
