During a recent interview, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler recalled how Chadwick Boseman’s accent for the starring role of T’Challa initially freaked out Disney executives. Boseman, who starred as Black Panther in the 2018 Coogler-directed film, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, passed away at the age of 43-years-old in 2020 due to colon cancer.

While appearing on the New York City radio show The Breakfast Club, Ryan Coogler — who has also directed Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and his new film Sinners — recalled the reaction from Disney execs who showed up to the set of Black Panther early in the production.

According to Coogler, Chadwick Boseman remained in character even when they weren’t shooting, which included using T’Challa’s Wakandan accent, which apparently spooked the Mouse House suits.

“He was talking in an African accent. Disney execs came to see us on Panther. It was week two and they pulled up and it was the T’Challa accent and they were freaked out. I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off until we wrap,’” Coogler said on The Breakfast Club while promoting his newest film Sinners, hitting theaters on April 18.

Black Panther, of course, wound up becoming a historic success for Marvel Studios and Disney as it grossed over $1 billion and became the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

In addition to Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, Sinners also stars Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo. You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for Sinners below ahead of the film’s release on April 18.

“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”
