Cameron Diaz Says She’s Open To A ‘Mask’ Sequel But Only Under 1 Condition

Cameron Diaz is game for a sequel to “The Mask” — but doesn’t want to carry it herself.

Diaz is currently basking in a bit of a career renaissance after more than a decade away from Hollywood. While promoting her new aptly-titled film, “Back in Action,” seemed willing to reprise the role that made her famous in 1994 — but only under one condition.

When informed during an Access Hollywood interview Friday that Jim Carrey said he was open to a “Mask” sequel, and asked if Diaz would return as her character, Tina Carlyle, she excitedly replied: “Oh my God, did he say that? I mean, if Jim’s on board.”

“I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” Diaz added.

The blockbuster marked Diaz’s first major movie role, providing her with an iconic entrance in-character that served a real-life springboard for a decades-long career to come.

She’s since found her “Back in Action” co-star Jamie Foxx to be her biggest cheerleader.

In a ComicBook.com interview in December, Carrey indicated he might be up for a sequel: “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess.”

But he also noted that he announced his retirement in 2022 — only to return for a third “Sonic the Hedgehog” film after a lucrative offer he couldn’t refuse.

“It’s not really about the money,” he went on. “I joke about the money. … But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting.”

Diaz herself has previously joked about being “semi-retired,” and recently divulged that she took a hiatus after 2014’s “Annie” because she wanted to spend time with her family. The actor married Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden in 2015 and has two children.

Diaz said she only returned to work with Foxx. On Friday’s “Graham Norton Show,” she reportedly recalled thinking that if she had to leave her family to act, she “wanted to do it with the most talented man in the entertainment business.”
