On March 30, Willis’ family members, including Heming Willis, ex-wife Demi Moore, and his three daughters with Moore, released a joint statement announcing Willis’ retirement from acting and diagnosis with aphasia.
“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” the statement reads in part. “As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him. This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, aphasia “is a disorder that affects how you communicate. It can impact your speech, as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language.” It can be caused by a stroke or injury, but also have a slower onset due to a brain tumor or disease, for example. Willis’ family didn’t share any further information about the cause of his aphasia diagnosis.

In the caption of her Instagram video, Heming Willis wrote, “We don’t believe in perfection over here but #oursummer2022 was pretty close to it. In fact it was magic.”
The montage, which plays under the song “The Bones” by Maren Morris, shows Willis and his youngest daughters dancing and playing outside, as well as Willis and his wife taking a walk and sharing a kiss while doing some gardening.
The model also opened up about coping with the health issues of her husband of 13 years when she posted on Instagram on National Grief Awareness Day on Aug. 30.
“My grief can be paralyzing but I’m learning how to live along side it. As my step-daughter @scoutlaruewillis told me, grief is the deepest and purest form of love. I hope you find some comfort in that too,” Heming Willis wrote on Instagram.
Not long after, Heming Willis posted comments she received on the post to her Instagram Story, including one that said she had an “annoying … victim attitude” and one that said she “signed up” for being a caregiver because she married a man over 20 years her senior, as reported by Page Six.
‘When you’re not allowed to talk grief, self-care or being human in the world on grief awareness day…” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “My gawd. But in the words of the great, philosophical, insightful Bruce Willis … ‘Ah, [expletive] em.'”
