Whether on stage or off, Spears is passionate about dance. “Dancing also has a range of mental health and wellbeing benefits,” says Laura McKay, senior physiotherapist at Bupa UK. “It can help you to engage with your emotions and connect with other people. Some research suggests that regular dancing can improve your quality of life and help you feel less stressed.”
Spears loves to snack on fruit, especially strawberries and watermelon. “Did you know watermelon has more lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable? Lycopene is an antioxidant linked to decreased risk of cancer, heart disease and age-related eye disorders,” says Kristi Wempen, RDN. “As its name states, 92% of watermelon consists of water. No wonder it’s the most common melon eaten in America and is perfect for staying refreshed and hydrated on a hot summer day.”
Spears practises yoga “every darn day”, and says it makes her happy. “I believe if everyone practiced the techniques of yoga, we would have a preventive aid to a lot of our problems,” says Sat Bir Khalsa, PhD, neuroscientist and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “There would likely be less obesity and Type-II diabetes, and people would be less aggressive, more content and more integrated.”
Spears has been practicing gymnastics for most of her life—and it shows. The singer still posts videos of herself on social media showing off her skills. “Gуmnаѕtісѕ іѕ оnе оf thе bеѕt ехеrсіѕеѕ fоr trаіnіng fоr оvеrаll hеаlth аnd wеllnеѕѕ,” says Jacky Miller, RD. “Мultірlе ѕtudіеѕ оn thіѕ ѕubјесt рrоvе thе іmроrtаnсе оf gуmnаѕtісѕ fоr bоnе, muѕсlе, аnd соgnіtіvе hеаlth.”
Spears loves to swim both for exercise and for fun. “Swimmers have about half the risk of death compared with inactive people,” says the CDC. “People report enjoying water-based exercise more than exercising on land. They can also exercise longer in water than on land without increased effort or joint or muscle pain. Water-based exercise can benefit older adults by improving their quality of life and decreasing disability. It can also improve or help maintain the bone health of post-menopausal women.”
