BRITNEY Spears has announced plans to release a biopic film, and fans are having a blast speculating about a potential cast.
The pop icon shared the exciting news on X, formerly Twitter, leading to an onslaught of buzz from fans.
Britney, 42, posted the news on the social media platform, adding that she was working with producer Marc Platt, who worked on La La Land.
The same day, it was revealed that in addition to Marc, director Jon M. Chu, who is known for directing Wicked, has been linked to the project as well, according to Variety.
Universal Pictures won the rights to Britney’s memoir, The Woman in Me, in an auction.
The book, released in October 2023, detailed the Oops! I Did It Again singer’s journey to stardom from her days in Disney‘s Mickey Mouse Club through her conservatorship.
It included details about her relationship with Justin Timberlake, as well as her contentious family bonds.
Popular X account @PopCrave posted about the film on it’s page, leading to rampant speculation about who will star in the film.
WHO WILL IT BE?
In the comments, one fan wondered, “Who will play her? Millie [Bobby Brown]?”
“Derrick Barry you got to audition,” another fan wrote, adding a photo of the RuPaul’s Drag Race star.
“There is literally no one who looks like young Britney. Gonna be hard shoes to fill,” suggested a third X user.
“@TrishaPaytas now’s your time,” joked a fourth fan.
“Lowkey want sabrina carpenter to play her,” another commenter penned.
“Halsey is perfect to play her,” wrote a sixth social media user.
“Millie [Bobby Brown] should play her,” another commenter suggested.
Britney Spears’ conservatorship timeline
In September 2021, Britney’s case returned to a Los Angeles courtroom where Judge Brenda Penny made a number of bombshell rulings, following her father’s decision to end the conservatorship the month prior.
She ruled to rid Jamie of his daughter’s conservatorship, however, it did not mean the end of the conservatorship altogether.
Speaking in court, Judge Brenda Penny said: “Based on what I read in the filings, and I read everything. I do believe the suspension of Jamie Spears is in the best interest of Britney Spears.
“The current situation is unattainable. The court finds the toxic environment Jamie Spears has created needs to be removed today.”
Following the judge’s decision, a temporary conservator was put in Jamie’s place for about a month.
In early November 2021, Jamie was back in court filing new legal documents that show he’s done fighting.
Jamie had previously demanded $2 million in exchange for stepping down but documents at the time showed that he was not seeking any further compensation.
On November 12, Judge Penny ruled in favor of the pop star, removing Jamie from the position of conservator without requiring any further mental examination from Britney.
“The top choice,” a seventh fan posted, adding a photo of Emma Watson next to Britney, commented.
“Only one thespian can pull off this tall order,” wrote someone else, adding a GIF of Anna Faris.
McKenna Grace and Miley Cyrus were also widely suggested in the comments.
WHAT WE KNOW
On Thursday, Britney tweeted about the film on X.
“Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies…stay tuned,” she posted.
In addition to the rights to her story, Universal will have rights to Britney’s entire back catalog of music for the photo following an eight-figure deal.
“Britney has had an unbelievable career and it will be a major challenge to fit everything into feature film,” a movie insider said, according to an earlier report from The US Sun.
“But she has been told in no uncertain terms that things won’t be sugar-coated and it will very much show all of her lows, as well as her career-defining highs.”
They continued, “That is going to be hard for her to watch but she is being involved in all aspects of the film and was part of the team deciding who would get to move forward in bringing her story to the big screen.”
