While filming the final season of Better Call Saul, beloved series lead Bob Odenkirk suffered a serious heart attack on set that legitimately almost killed him.
Luckily for both Odenkirk and the rest of us, the 60-year-old Breaking Bad alum survived and is currently alive and well as he embarks on a post-Better Call Saul career.
Had Odenkirk tragically passed away as a result of that heart attack, though, the actor says he actually would’ve wanted the role of Saul Goodman to be recast so the series could have the conclusion it deserved.
“It was a scary day for everybody there. I really went down, I really turned gray. It really seemed over,” Odenkirk said in a bonus feature from the season six Blu-ray release.
“They would have just stopped the show if I wasn’t capable of doing it. They wouldn’t have tried to go on, which makes me feel bad! If that’d happened, I would have liked it if they got some actor to play him. Just to tell the story that they had written. It wouldn’t have been great but it would have been better than nothing.”
Hopefully, Odenkirk’s commitment to the role of Saul Goodman — even in a hypothetical post-mortem situation — will get him the Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series that he’s long deserved.
