Prized items from the late basketball legend and ardent Deadhead Bill Walton are on display and hitting the auction block. The Pennsylvania-based Hunt Auctions has announced The Personal Collection of Bill Walton, an expansive offering of items that span his celebrated sports career and Grateful Dead fandom. Bidding is set to begin on Thursday, June 12, at 2 p.m. E.T. Browse the auction’s digital catalog here.
Walton passed away on May 27, 2024, at the age of 71, following a prolonged battle with colon cancer. In the wake of his death, the Walton family has taken stock of his memorabilia and will provide fans and avid followers with the chance to procure a piece of history highlighted via the expansive collection that features NBA jerseys from his time with UCLA and the Portland Trail Blazers, as well as his Boston Celtics championship ring and watch.
Apart from his effervescent career as a center, Walton was also a devoted Deadhead and passionate music enthusiast. As a result of his passion, the auction presents an expansive sprawl of band-related items, from concert posters to backstage passes and a very special selection of Walton’s Father Time costumes from New Year’s Eve 2000, 2009, 2015, and 2020.
Limited edition signed Mickey Hart prints are available. Also included are rare Stanley Mouse Europe ‘72 signed album art prints and a band-signed cymbal featuring a personal inscription from Jerry Garcia: “Hey Bill! Beat this.”
A portion of the auction proceeds will benefit causes at the University of California, San Diego. For more reflections on Walton, read Mickey Hart’s 2024 interview with Relix.
