He has been on the hunt for an elusive ’20 footer’ for years and for one short moment, fans of Garrett Galvin aka ‘FishinGarrett‘ thought he had finally accomplished his goal of finding a 20-foot Burmese python.
While he didn’t ‘yoink’ a 20-footer, he started his latest video by telling his followers he did. That alone should give you a sense of how large his latest catch was.
Fishin’ Garrett ‘Yoinks’ 16-Foot Burmese Python In Florida
Shortly into the latest clip, Garrett revealed that it wasn’t actually the 20-footer he has been searching worldwide for. Because he is, after all, looking for a 20-foot Burmese python here in Florida and also a 20-foot green anaconda on his frequent trips to South America.
While it wasn’t a 20-footer, this 16-foot Burmese python is still plenty large enough to swallow a small dog, deer, or a bobcat here in Florida.
Garrett quickly revealed that “this is the biggest snake” he has ever caught in Florida. That is saying a LOT. He has amassed millions of followers and subscribers across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook with frequent videos of him ‘yoinking’ snakes. For this to be his largest is a major milestone.
Capturing invasive snakes in Florida
Galvin said he was able to track the 16-foot Burmese python after seeing her tracks in the road.
Presumably, this was a dirt road. Either that or there was a lot of debris in the road so we’ll assume it was dirt.
Once he spotted the tracks, Fishing Garrett was able to find the 16-foot Burmese python and put the ‘yoink’ on her. He expected the large snake to put up a fight but nothing happened.
“She’s actually a sweetheart” he said when talking about the 16-footer’s docile behavior. I too would’ve expected more oomph from the python as it has been incredibly hot here in Florida lately and these cold-blooded tropical snakes would seemingly be more active.
Garrett revealed this Burmese python “didn’t try and bite me like the anacondas” which is fortunate. A bite from a 16-foot python could leave a mark that lasts a lifetime.
Once revealing it was a 16-footer and not a 20-footer, Garrett said “the main mission will continue.” That mission is to catch a 20-foot invasive Burmese python here in Florida and set a state record.
The Biggest Ever…
To date, the largest Burmese python caught in Florida measured 19-feet. It was caught two years ago and studied at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
22-year-old Naples, Florida-based python hunter Jake Waleri told the Conservancy of Southwest Florida “We brought the snake to the Conservancy to be officially measured and documented. We wanted to donate this find to science.”
