French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, known for iconic films like Amélie and Delicatessen, has returned with his first full-length film in nearly a decade. Not only is BigBug his first film since 2013, but this is the first pure sci-fi film that the director has made since Alien: Resurrection nearly twenty-five years ago. You can check out the first full-length trailer for BigBug right here:
The film takes place several decades into the future, in the year 2050. In this world, artificial intelligence is available to everyone who wants it. Need a mundane task accomplished for you? Just let the robots do it! The human race now relies on this robotic technology for nearly everything. And the robots look like they’re really and truly tired of being used by these reprehensible humans. And they’ve got something to say about their lot in life.
In the past several decades, we’ve seen a metric ton of movies about the rise of artificial intelligence. Everything from The Matrix to The Terminator has tackled this subject. But this film looks to tackle the subject matter with a lighter, more comical touch. And the usual Jean-Pierre Jeunet visual panache. Although one robot in the trailer looks like a menacing version of Gypsy from Mystery Science Theater 3000. Does anyone else see the resemblance?
Everything about this film is signature Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Including the mixture of campy aesthetics and very on-point cultural satire. BigBug was co-written by Jeunet and Guillaume Laurant. The cast of BigBug includes Dominique Pinon, Elsa Zylberstein, André Dussollier, Isabelle Nanty, Alban Lenoir, Claude Perron, Claire Chust, Stéphane De Groodt, and Youssef Hajdi.
After the poor response to Alien: Resurrection back in the day, it seemed like Jeunet might never return to the world of science fiction. But judging by this trailer, we’re glad he finally has.
BigBug hits Netflix on February 11.
