Ben Affleck’s Kids Critical Of ‘Armageddon’ Movie Logic

Ben Affleck’s kids are apparently tough critics. While much of Gen X and Millenial likely have a massive, if not slightly ironic, soft spot for the Michael Bay-directed 1998 sci-fi film Armageddon, that does not appear to be the case for Gen Z, which is the generation Affleck’s kids belong to.

While out on the promotional trail selling his new film The Accountant 2, Ben Affleck detailed how his children — Violet, 19, Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13, all of whom he had with ex-wife Jennifer Garner — are quite the tough movie critics.

According to the Academy Award-winning writer (Good Will Hunting) and director (Argo), Affleck’s son Samuel was critical of Armageddon for not making sense. This, however, certainly isn’t surprising, as Affleck himself was famously critical of the film’s logic in the DVD commentary.

“They don’t censor their criticism. They’re, like, very tough. And they don’t censor their criticism, you know what I mean? They’ll sit right next to me watching a movie, and just, while it’s happening, ‘This is terrible. I mean, this is terrible! Why did you do this?!’” Affleck told Kimmel.

“All the kids were in the house [during quarantine] and I was like, ‘Hey, let’s watch a movie.’ Almost immediately, it was like, ‘What? What is this? … Are you kidding me?’ My son was like, ‘This doesn’t make sense,’. [I replied], ‘This is not a logic-based film! That is not one of the criteria we used making this!’”

While Affleck’s son may have a point from a logical perspective, that point of view is irrelevant when it comes to Armageddon.

Armageddon — a movie about a group of oil drillers being trained as astronauts so they can land on an world-killing asteroid and blow it up with a nuke before it collides with Earth — isn’t a movie you’re supposed to think about — it’s one you’re *supposed to feel*, as it’s got: comedy, drama, sci-fi, action, romantic love (Affleck/Liv Tyler) and familial love (Bruce Willis/Tyler).

It’s literally got everything you could ask for in a movie — it’s okay to turn your brain off for a bit, and that’s exactly what Armageddon asks of its audience and delivers on if you walk with it.
