Jerry McArthur experienced the thrill of a lifetime in Howe Sound to the north of Vancouver when he was surrounded by hundreds of dolphins while riding his electric hydrofoil board. McArthur is the CEO and founder of the The HydroFlyer, the electric foil board he was riding, and was out filming with his 360-degree camera when the nearly 20-minute encounter with hundreds of dolphins took place.
The HydroFlyer board allows him to glide a few feet above the surface, similar to other foil boards. Initially, when he spotted the dolphins Jerry McArthur said he gave the pod a “wide berth” but the very curious creatures came in for a closer look…
First he noticed maybe 20 dolphins swimming underneath him. Before he knew it, there were hundreds of dolphins around him and according to McArthur, some were flipping upside down while swimming in order to get a good look at the alien-like contraption he was riding on. Try and wrap your mind around what this experience must’ve been like for the dolphins, who are very intelligent creatures.
The only time in my life I’ve ever been surrounded by literally hundreds of dolphins was fishing off Costa Rica when a super pod came through and brought marlin/sailfish/tuna with them. The fishing had been slow all morning until the dolphins showed up, about 5 minutes before a rainstorm, and as soon as the dolphins arrived the reels started screaming and we caught 3 blue marlin in rapid succession.
It was probably the coolest fishing experience I’ve ever had. I caught the first blue marlin but we were out fishing for sailfish on lighter rigs. Behind the boat a sailfish raised and went for one of the teasers when out of nowhere a blue marlin crashed in front of it, ripped a hook and started screaming drag. So there I was fighting a blue marlin on a much lighter sailfish rig. It was truly an incredible experience and I will always be thankful for that super pod of dolphins chasing huge schools of baitfish from who knows where right into our path.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have my 360-degree camera with me that day like Jerry McArthur did and I wasn’t able to capture what it’s like being in the middle of hundreds of dolphins:
McArthur told the CBC “they wanted to play, I guess. All I could see were dolphins … there were probably about 100.” He added “they’re like Ferrari cars. They need high octane fuel, they can travel up to 45 kilometers an hour.”
The HydroFlyer, which McArthur was riding, looks nothing short of incredible. But for $16K, it should be incredible, right?
