Awards Ceremony, Movie Premieres, Parties & More

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival continues on Day 5 with the world premieres of Die My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, and New Wave, directed by Richard Linklater, starring Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, and Zoey Deutch.

Linklater’s take on the film New Wave (Nouvelle Vague) is the story of Godard making Breathless, told in the style and spirit in which Godard made A Bout de Souffle (Breathless). French actor Marbeck portrays Jean-Luc Godard, Deutch plays Jean Seberg, and newcomer Dullin portrays Jean-Paul Belmondo. Guests on the red carpet included the cast of the film and Damian Lewis, Naomi Ackie, Lucien Laviscount, Quentin Tarantino, and more.

Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, set in rural America, portrays a woman consumed by love and madness. The film stars Robert Pattinson as the husband of Lawrence’s character and LaKeith Stanfield as her lover, with Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte, and Sarah Lind in supporting roles.

Other films premiering today include Harris Duckinson’s directorial debut, Urchin, The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol by Sylvain Chomet, Orwell: 2+2=5 by Raoul Peck, and Le Roi Soleil from director Vincent Maël Cardona.

Premieres today include La Petite Derniére, The Wave by Sebastián Lelio, Bono: Stories of Surrender by Andrew Dominik, and Sons of the Neon Night by Juno Mak. Earlier pressers and photocalls included Sirât, Dossier 137, Arco, Amrum, The Plague, and The Mysterious Gaze Of The Flamingo.

Pressers and photocalls today at Palais des Festivals included La Petite Derniére; Eddington; Bono: Stories Of Surrender; L’inconnu De La Grande Arche (The Great Arch); La Ola” (La Vague/The Wave), and Marcel Et Monsieur Pagnol” (A Magnificent Life).

Buzzy world premieres this week have included Ari Aster’s star-studded film Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone; Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water; and director Dominik Moll’s Dossier 137 starring Léa Drucker. 

Premieres taking place at the festival next are Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, led by a star-studded cast including Tom Hanks, Benecio del Toro and Mia Threapleton; Eleanor The Great, starring June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Sentimental Value from Joachim Trier, starring Renate Reinsve; Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, with Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright and A$SAP Rocky; Alpha from Julia Ducournau; Carla Simone with Romeria,  and Tarik Saleh with The Eagles of the Republic.

Over the next week, the jury, led by Juliette Binoche, will evaluate the 21 films in competition and award the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on May 24, immediately followed by the screening of Momoko Sato’s Dandelion’s Odyssey.
