It didn’t take very long for Astronomer to find a new CEO after the man who held that position before attending a Coldplay concert last week resigned over a viral video that took the internet by storm. A temproary replacement was quickly named, and he wasted no time entering the spin zone while referencing the scandal that led to him landing his new gig.
If the words “Coldplay cheating scandal” don’t mean anything to you, I can only assume you either recently awoke from a coma you initially fell into at least five days ago or decided today would be the day to find out what this whole “internet” thing is about for the first time.
If you don’t fall into either of those camps, you’re likely already familiar with the saga that unfolded after Andy Byron, the CEO of a tech company called Astronomer, was caught on camera embracing a woman who resembled the corporation’s head of HR at a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium last week before they went viral after trying to escape the spotlight in the most conspicuous manner possible.
Based on all of the evidence that has emerged since that video went viral, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin correctly surmised the camera had managed to expose an affair, and it didn’t take long for people online to confirm that was the case after digging into their personal lives.
On Friday, Astronomer—which markets itself as an “orchestration-first DataOps platform built on Apache Airflow” and boasts a valuation of over $1.2 billion—announced it was conducting an investigation into the incident, and over the weekend, Byron officially resigned from his role as CEO.
As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.

One of the company’s co-founders has stepped into that position in an interim role, and he wasn’t afraid to address the elephant in the room after taking the reins.
The man who stepped up after Andy Byron resigned as the CEO of Astronomer tried to explain why the Coldplay cheating scandal could actually be beneficial
I assume I’m far from the only person who was unfamiliar with the existence of Astronomer at this point last week, as it’s not the kind of company you really need to know about unless you’re in a line of work where you require the fairly technical services that it offers.
Pete DeJoy is one of the five co-founders who helped the platform get off the ground in Cincinnati a decade ago, and he was most recently serving as Astronomer’s Chief Product Officer before he was tapped to temporarily fill the void that formed in the wake of Byron’s departure.
On Monday, he did what he could to assuage any concerns stemming from that development with the missive he posted on LinkedIn while addressing the onus for the turnover, saying:
“The events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies—let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world—ever encounter. The spotlight has been unusual and surreal for our team and, while I would never have wished for it to happen like this, Astronomer is now a household name.”
That’s one way to look on the bright side.
