Asmongold wants “exploitative” VTuber orgs to ‘die’ as Gawr Gura leaves Hololive

Twitch star Asmongold says he hopes VTuber orgs will ‘die’ out after Gawr Gura announced she was leaving Hololive over “disagreements” with the agency.

In an April 16 live stream, Gawr Gura revealed she’ll be “graduating” from Hololive on May 1.

The VTuber cited “disagreements with management and company direction” as the reason for her departure, adding that this move was a “long time coming.”

In response to this news, Twitch streamer Asmongold and his former OTK buddy Tectone weighed in, calling VTuber orgs “exploitative” and arguing that Gawr Gura’s situation is just the tip of the iceberg.

Asmongold calls out VTuber orgs for ‘exploiting’ talent

Following Gawr Gura’s announcement, Tectone made a series of posts on X accusing agencies of taking “predatory” cuts of creators’ revenue.

“Things need to change. VTubers deserve better,” he said.

Asmongold further chimed in, adding that he hopes these agencies ‘die’ and that VTubers should consider exploring other career options.

“Compared to traditional orgs and streaming agencies, VTuber-centric orgs are often exploitative to say the least,” he remarked. “This seems to be a vestigial function of idol management groups in primarily Japan, so I hope it will keep dying as VTubers realize they have other options now.”

Meanwhile, Tectone continued to call out the companies, adding that the talent are the ones who make the orgs, not the other way around.

“Hopefully, this will lead to more VTubers leaving big corporations that were taking a massive cut of their earnings,” the streamer added.

“If Gura is saying it’s bad for her, you need to understand that it’s EVEN WORSE for lesser known VTubers in Hololive’s roster. Those who don’t have the massive outreach and popularity that she does.”

Others noted that the day of Gura’s decision, Cover Corp, Hololive’s parent company, had its stock fall by 10%.

“There are some things that are clear, such as the fact some investors lost confidence in Cover over management’s decision,” YouTuber Legal Mindset chimed in.

We’ll have to see what happens with Hololive and more VTubers in the future and if Gura ends up sparking a huge shift in the industry.
