Asmongold sparks debate after revealing why he never tipped at restaurants

Twitch star Asmongold has left the internet divided after revealing why he refused to tip at restaurants before he was rich.

Prior to being one of the most popular content creators on Twitch, Asmongold had a pretty rough upbringing, as he’s documented in past videos.

Growing up, he didn’t have much money, and according to Asmon, he wouldn’t tip when he’d go out to restaurants. However, his issue wasn’t about money, but rather who the tip was going to.

Speaking to viewers during an April 2025 broadcast, Asmongold called tipping “stolen valor” and explained that he would rather tip the people making his food than the staff bringing it out.

Asmongold slams tipping culture as “stolen valor”

“I have no problem tipping people now, because I have a lot of money, but before that, I never tipped in general,” he said. “Even if I was being waited on.”

The Twitch streamer continued, stating that the chefs at restaurants don’t get enough credit.

“I would much rather tip the chef and the cook that made my food than the waiter who brings it to me. It’s like stolen valor almost!” he exclaimed. “You’ve got a guy sitting in there, in the kitchen, sweating his f**king ass off dealing with this. And then it’s somebody else you got to deal with.”

Asmongold added that it would be easier to replace a waiter than a cook, noting how that’s already happening thanks to the advent of apps like Uber Eats and Doordash.

These remarks sparked a heated debate in online communities, with users arguing for and against Asmongold’s reasoning with many believing the onus should be on the government to raise the minimum wage and erase tipping completely.

Amid the debate, Asmongold commented on a tweet by Drama Alert, clarifying his position on tipping and why he’s against it.

“Tipping culture gives upper middle-class Americans the rare opportunity to shame and look down on working class Americans with moral righteousness. That’s one of the reasons we still have it, a socially acceptable way to class shame.”

Asmongold isn’t the only creator to spark backlash for his views on tipping and likely won’t be the last. Back in 2024, a TikToker went viral after revealing she saved $150 every week by refusing to tip at restaurants.
