People have been searching for the Ark of the Covenant pretty much since stories about it disappearing sometime around 586 BC first appeared in the Bible. Now, a group of archaeologists say they have located ruins in Israel that they believe were once the home of the Ark.

The Ark of the Covenant, also known as the Ark of the Testimony or the Ark of God, was a religious storage chest that supposedly contained numerous items including the Ten Commandments. According to Exodus 25:22 in the Bible, God even spoke to Moses “from between the two cherubim” on the Ark’s lid.

Archaeologists excavating at the ancient biblical site of Shiloh in Israel believe they have uncovered the stone foundations of the biblical Tabernacle where the Ark of the Covenant was once housed.

What proof do they have?

“We have identified a monumental building from the Iron Age I period that perfectly matches the biblical specifications,” said Dr. Scott Stripling, director of the Tel Shiloh excavations. “It is oriented east-west and has an internal ratio of 2 to 1, characteristics that are precisely described in Exodus.”

Pottery fragments scattered among the more than 100,000 animal bones, mostly from sheep, goats and oxen, discovered at the site date back to the same time period when the Ark of the Covenant would have been housed there.

“These findings cannot be considered coincidence,” Stripling told The Christian Broadcasting Network. “The evidence of ritual sacrifice here is overwhelming, and it matches the biblical account to a degree that’s hard to ignore.”

The search for a totally different kind of ark

Meanwhile, as all of this is going on in Israel, archaeologists in Turkey are planning to dig up a site where they believe Noah’s Ark is located. The site, known as the Durupinar formation, is located about 18 miles south of the summit of Mount Ararat in Turkey. The location contains a boat-shaped 538-foot-long geological formation that they believe matches the measurements for Noah’s Ark stated in the Bible.

None of this is new to the CIA, who, according to declassified documents, knew about the location of Noah’s Ark decades ago. Just like they knew where the Ark of the Covenant is located.
