DC star Nicole Kidman has spoken about her love for cold ocean swimming, especially as a way to relieve stress and start the day on a positive note. Kidman, who plays Alanna in Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom shared a picture of herself wearing a black swimsuit, posing in the ocean against beautiful blue skies. “Friday feeling,” she captioned the stunning shot. “What a feeling,” a fan commented. Kidman is 56 and looks like the best version of herself at any age—here’s how she does it.
Kidman keeps things simple with her skincare routine. “Simplicity is key! I always say less is more,” she says. “I wouldn’t say I have a typical skincare routine as my routine definitely changes based on where I am (Nashville vs Sydney), what I’m doing (i.e; on-set or on vacation) and the weather… Over the years I’ve added more oils and serums to my routine but my constant is a simple cleanser. And I’m always wearing sunscreen. I’m so grateful my parents were serious about sun protection when I was a child! Growing up in Australia, we spent so much time at the beach, my parents were always very serious about keeping my skin safe from the sun.”
Kidman says certain decisions add to her daily happiness. “Choosing to feel gratitude, first and foremost,” she says. “Choosing to sleep in sometimes rather than get up and exercise—give things up so that I can have more time with my kids. Making the time to go with my husband and have a date. And I’m willing always to adapt and change. I’m not rigid. I like that feeling of going, you know what? This morning, I’m just not gonna do that. I’m just gonna sit and read the paper, and we’re all just gonna kick back. And I know that we have plans, but we’re not gonna do that. We’re gonna change that. I have a big thing about just being easy on yourself, and on others. To go with the flow.”
Kidman keeps up with the news but knows when to take a break from it. “To me, it’s a Sunday thing—the physical paper,” she says. “I grew up with parents who sat with the paper on Sunday. I love that. And then I’ll catch up online as well. But I’m not a news junkie. I’m very deeply sensitive. So I have to tune out sometimes. I’ll go for a run or a hike or I’ll get out and swim with the kids in the morning and then go to work. I’ll go jump in the ocean when we’re in Monterey shooting Big Little Lies. I would literally go down and get in that freezing cold ocean, even just for one minute.”
Kidman is inspired by her mother’s approach to beauty. “My mom [Janelle Kidman] is a feminist and also very feminine,” she says. “She always smells good and looks good. I teach my daughters [to be] the same. I’m like, ‘You need to smell good, look good, take care of your skin, file your nails, and take care of your feet. Do it yourself; it’s your responsibility.’ It’s not just about hygiene; it’s about how they enter the world. I try to make myself presentable in the morning. I feel better inside when I decide to do my hair and put on a dress — not just my same old sweatpants or jeans.”
Kidman is especially diligent about sun protection because she loves being outside. “I love playing tennis, and I love working out outdoors,” she says. “I love going for a run and swimming, and I just want to be able to do all of that and protect my skin because I get burnt. So having the access to Neutrogena’s skincare and suncare is fantastic for me. And I know a lot about it because I’ve researched it; I’ve been educated; I have enormous knowledge about it now. I use vitamin C too because that does give you some protection long-term. And I believe in using retinol at night, so I use the Neutrogena Night Repair. I know people go, “Retinol! It’ll make your skin dry,” but it doesn’t.”
