Ana de Armas assumes the role of a dancing assassin in Ballerina, a new action film from Lionsgate taking place within the John Wick universe arriving on June 6th, 2025.
The new trailer follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) being trained as an assassin in the Ruska Roma tradition a la John Wick and eventually kicking ass and taking names out in the world. There’s dancing, fighting, and even some dance-fighting, all soundtracked to a high-action rendition of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.” According to a press release, the film takes places during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, complete with a special appearance from Keanu Reeves as John Wick himself.
Titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the film also stars Ian McShane, Anjelica Houston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus. Underworld helmer Len Wiseman will direct with John Wick: Chapter 3 and 4 scribe Shay Hatten penning the screenplay.
Ballerina follows the 2023 sequel John Wick: Chapter 4. Revisit our review of the film, in which we praised the film’s gripping action but lamented its nearly-three hour runtime and unimaginative plot.
Meanwhile, Ballerina isn’t the only John Wick spinoff film in the works: Donnie Yen is reportedly returning as Caine for a yet-to-be-titled assassin film, and that project is slated to begin production in Hong Kong in 2025.
