The classic reality competition show American Gladiators is getting a reboot at Prime Video.
A nationwide search for contestants to take on the show’s own gladiators in a custom-built arena is already underway. In addition to original events like “Gauntlet,” “Hang Tough,” and “The Eliminator,” the reboot will feature new challenges.
Amazon MGM Studios will produce the revival with MGM Alternative.
“Gladiators is an enduring, physical challenge format that continues to engage families around the world,” Head of Brand and Content Innovation for Amazon MGM Studios Lauren Anderson said in a statement. “We look forward to delighting our global Prime Video customers with both reimagined and nostalgic elements that celebrate the best of the original series.”
The original Gladiators ran for seven seasons from 1989 through 1996 and saw contestants face off against elite athletes with nicknames like “Nitro,” “Blaze,” “Storm,” “Ice,” and “Diamond.” It was briefly revived in 2008 at NBC and was also rebooted earlier this year by BBC.
A documentary on the original show titled Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators premiered last year on Netflix. Read our review while we await more details of the reboot.
