Amber Heard has reportedly hired a new legal team as she prepares to appeal the ruling in the defamation lawsuit filed by her ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Earlier this summer, a judge in a Virginia court ruled in favor of Depp, who had sued Heard for defamation in relation to an op-ed piece she wrote for the Washington Post back in 2018.
In addition to ruling in Depp’s favor, the judge ordered Heard to pay Depp $10 million in damages, which is a fee that her lawyer said she “absolutely” cannot afford.
Amber Heard has hired a new legal team ahead of her appeal of the Johnny Depp defamation case ruling
Amber Heard is replacing most of her legal team and leaning into the Constitution as she prepares to appeal the multimillion-dollar defamation verdict awarded to Johnny Depp. Not entirely unexpected, the move by the Aquaman actress to cut loose her main attorney Elaine Bredehoft follows weeks of judicial jockeying by both Heard and Depp to have another kick at the courtroom can with notices of intended appeals.
Heard has now hired David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown to represent her attempt to rescind the judgment. Ben Rottenborn of Virginia-based Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black will remain as a co-counsel. [via Deadline]
Following the ruling, while Depp’s career has seemingly been on the mend — he’s been touring with Jeff Beck this summer, in addition to beginning production on his next film — Heard’s has been anything but as her future as Mera in the DCEU is now apparently on the verge of coming to an end, with some reports indicating she’s been cut out of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom entirely.
At this time, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17, 2023. In addition to Heard, the film also stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna. The film is also set to feature an appearance from Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
