Alison Krauss & Union Station have shared “Granite Mills,” the second single from their long-awaited reunion album Arcadia. Set to release on March 28 via Down The Road Records, the first new album in 14 years from the all-star ensemble—who together have accrued a staggering 70 Grammy Awards—is a ten-song testament to the timelessness of the musical mantle they carry with unparalleled talent and acclaim. Innovative and reverent approaches to traditional music abound throughout, exemplified by today’s chilling a propulsive second preview
“Granite Mills” is the first Union Station offering to feature lead vocals from mandolinist and singer Russell Moore, well-known for his group IIIrd Tyme Out and honored as the most awarded male vocalist in the history of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Moore stands in for longtime member Dan Tyminski and brings an irresistible new element to the band’s masterful combination, with grit and gravity that fuel the blazing spirit of today’s harrowing historic tale.
“Jerry, Ron, Barry and I all met when Dan Tyminski left the band, and Jerry asked me, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘Russell Moore,’ and they all said, ‘Absolutely!’ I couldn’t believe it when we went into the studio and his voice came through the speakers,” Krauss shared in a statement. “He just stands there and sings with his hands in his pockets, and he kills it. The first song he did was ‘Granite Mills’ and about 10 minutes in, Ron was covering his mouth because he started giggling. Russell came in and inspired us all.”
“To say I’m excited about recording and touring with Alison Krauss & Union Station would be a huge understatement,” Moore reflected. “After 40 years of playing music full-time and leading my own group for 34 years, this opportunity is among the few things at the top of the list that my music career has offered me. My hopes and desires are to fill this spot in AKUS with the same professionalism, precision, and thoughtfulness as other members who have held this position before me, and I’m looking forward to the ‘ride’!”
Arcadia was recorded in Nashville, Tenn. and self-produced by Krauss and the band. The tracklist features songs by masters like Robert Lee Castleman, Viktor Krauss, Bob Lucas, JD McPherson and Sarah Siskind, whose works underscore the timeless tradition of bluegrass music and the ultimate, universal truths that make that heritage as potent as ever.
“The stories of the past are told in this music,” Krauss said of the forthcoming project. “It’s that whole idea of ‘in the good old days when times were bad.’ There’s so much bravery and valor and loyalty and dreaming, of family and themes of human existence that were told in a certain way when our grandparents were alive. Someone asked me, ‘How do you sing these tragic tunes?’ I have to. It’s a calling. I feel privileged to be a messenger of somebody else’s story. And I want to hear what happened.”
Krauss & Union Station will celebrate their revival with their first tour since 2015, plotting 73 dates across North America from April to September. All but four of the performances on the Arcadia tour feature a special guest set from Willie Watson. Read more on the band’s imminent outing here.
