Alicia Silverstone Shares 'Clueless' TV Series Update

After 30 years, Alicia Silverstone wants to give Cher Horowitz the proper comeback treatment.

Following the news that a series adaptation of her breakout 1995 teen movie Clueless is in development at Peacock, the Golden Globe nominee recently shared her excitement about the update, although she couldn’t reveal anything.

“I’m really excited about it,” she said on Today. “I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.”

Silverstone continued, “So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”

Inspired by Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, Silverstone starred in the Amy Heckerling-written/directed Clueless as wealthy Beverly Hills teen Cher Horowitz, who sets up two lonely teachers and gives a new student a makeover in her mission to do good deeds, all while navigating her own love life.

In April, Deadline reported that a TV series adaptation was in the works at Peacock with Silverstone attached to reprise her role as Cher and executive produce. It is written and executive produced by Gossip Girl duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire and Dollface creator Jordan Weiss, with Heckerling and the 1995 film’s producer Robert Lawrence also executive producing the series, from CBS Studios in association with Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Silverstone got high marks from fans after reprising her Clueless character in a Super Bowl ad for Rakuten two years ago.
