Before he became an acclaimed director, helming films such as Ex MachinaAnnihilation and Civil War, Alex Garland made a career out of writing incredible sci-fi films such as The Beach (a novel which was adapted into a Leonardo DiCaprio film), 28 Days Later (and its sequel), Dredd, and Sunshine, the latter of which being one of the most underrated sci-fi films of the century so far.

Speaking to Alex Garland alongside his Warfare co-director Ray Medonza ahead of the release of the film on April 11, BroBible asked the cerebral writer/director what about Sunshine he’s most proud of now that it’s been almost 20 years since it was released.

Not only was Sunshine written by Garland, but it was directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle and featured a mind-blowing A-list cast of Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, and Mark Strong (who we’ve also asked about Sunshine).

According to Garland, looking on the project almost two decades later, what makes him most proud is that they got Sunshine over the line at a time when films like it weren’t really being made.

“It arrived at a time when there was a certain kind of sci-fi that hadn’t been made for a long time. It used to exist a lot, and it tailed off slightly. Not vanished completely, but its frequency and its support had dried up a bit. I’m pleased that we managed to get it made at that time because it wasn’t easy,” Garland explained.

Garland’s latest film Warfare, co-directed with Navy SEAL and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendonza, stars D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, and Charles Melton.
