The first trailer for The Ritual, an upcoming horror film starring Al Pacino and Dan Stevens, has been released. The Ritual is based on true story of the possession of Emma Schmidt, which is reported as being most documented exorcism in American history.

The legendary Al Pacino, now 84 years old, stars in The Ritual as Father Theophilus Riesinger, a real German-American Capuchin friar and priest who became known for performing exorcisms in the United States. Emma Schmidt, born in 1882 Wisconsin, allegedly suffered from demonic possession for decades, from age 14 to 46, until she was given an exorcism by Father Riesinger.

The Ritual marks Pacino’s first starring role since featuring in Ridley Scott’s 2021 film House of Gucci (he had a small role in the Michael Keaton-directed film Knox Goes Away in 2023).

In addition to Al Pacino and Dan Stevens, The Ritual will star Ashley Greene, Patricia Heaton, Abigail Cowen, Ritchie Montgomery, Camila Giraldo, Emily Brinks, Enrico Natale, Liann Pattison, and Courtney Rae Allen.

Pacino also has the films Billy Knight, In the Hand of Dante, Killing Castro, Easy’s Waltz, Lear Rex, and Dead Man’s Wife, although it’s unclear to what extent he’s involved in those projects and when they will be released.

As for Stevens, the 42 year old English actor has been everywhere in recent years, starring in a trio of films in 2024 — Cuckoo, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Abigail — and also recently had a role in the Robert De Niro-starring Netflix series Zero Day. Stevens’ upcoming projects include films such as Swiped, Onslaught, and another Godzilla x Kong movie, and a voice role in an animated adaptation of the hit video game Among Us.
