Costco earns top remarks for its wide assortment of bulk merchandise and signature line of Kirkland products, which includes official Costco-branded apparel. Like a majority of big-box retailers, Costco utilizes its in-house label to offer groceries and more at competitive prices, incentivizing shoppers to choose Kirkland over name brands. However, in some instances, customers say it’s worth coughing up the extra cash to secure high-quality products from trusted brands. In a viral Reddit thread, shoppers share which Kirkland products they’re “consistently, thoroughly, depressingly disappointed with.”

Shoppers are ditching Costco’s sharp cheddar cheese and replacing it with Tillamook’s version.

“I never realized the total absence of flavor in Kirkland Cheddar,” wrote a Redditor, who picked up a block of Tillamook cheese after their “usual Kirkland [cheese] was sold out.”

“We just bought Kirkland Sharp Cheddar cheese and it is not sharp, and I agree, it has no flavor,” replied another shopper. “Will not be buying it again.”

2. Kirkland laundry detergent

Costco shoppers agree that the Kirland detergent brand “doesn’t wash well” and gives clothes “a funky smell.”

“Those Kirkland laundry pods smell godawful. I was so hyped by the deal, horrified by the results,” commented a Redditor.

A health-conscious shopper said they ditched the Kirkland Ultra Clean Free & Clear HE Liquid Laundry Detergent because it contains methylisothiazolinone, “which is toxic and causes skin irritation.” In 2016, the European Union banned methylisothiazolinone from body care formulas.

According to one shopper, the Kirkland makeup wipes are “garbage.”

“They sting my eyes,” reads their post. In the comments section, another said they experienced a “horrible burning pain” using the wipes.
“They don’t work very well if you use waterproof mascara or long-wear lipstick,” said a third.

“I found them to be incredibly harsh. I don’t have particularly sensitive skin, but they stung and burned. Went back to my regular liquid remover,” shared another.

When it comes to groceries, shoppers have stopped buying poultry from Costco due to a lack of freshness.

“Kirkland fresh organic chicken breasts are horrible,” stated one Redditor. “I love the cost savings but the chicken breasts are slimy, torn up and poor quality.”

“I refuse to buy them there anymore. Have had great luck with the organic free range chicken breasts at Aldi,” offered up another customer.

5. Kirkland dishwasher tabs

“The Kirkland ones are trash,” said a shopper about the brand’s dishwasher pods.

“The perfume is way too strong, it lingers in a not good way,” wrote another in agreement. “Your food will taste like it, silicone and plastic materials hang onto it for ages.”

Simply put, “they don’t clean as well,” stated a third.

6. Kirkland batteries

Running low on batteries? Costco shoppers recommend opting for Amazon or Energizer instead.

“The Costco CEO has publicly said that their batteries are made by Duracell. Which is probably true. But in his remarks he made to sound as though they were just re-branded. Duracells with a Kirkland label, so to speak. However, they do NOT have the same working capacity. Not even close,” wrote a Redditor.

A second person chimed in, “And they often corrode in the packaging and devices. It took me too many years to break the Costco battery habit!”

7. Kirkland diapers

Costco isn’t on good terms with newborn parents. Earlier this year, First Quality was named the new manufacturer of Kirkland Diapers, a role previously held by Kimberly-Clark Corp., according to Bloomberg News. Kimberly-Clark Corp. is the manufacturer behind Huggies and Pull-Ups, while First Quality produces diapers for the baby care brand Cuties.

Parents are riled up about the switch. “The old Kirkland were incredible—I actually preferred them to Huggies! Now they are worse than anything I’ve tried,” wrote one user.

“I hate the new diapers!! Super thin and the tabs are flimsy,” said another.

Someone else compared the new Kirkland diapers to “something you’d expect from a dollar store.”

A fourth person said, “We stocked up on some old Kirkland [diapers] when they announced the change and then got some of the Huggies when they were on sale recently.”

8. Kirkland toilet paper

If you have sensitive skin, you might want to steer clear of Kirkland toilet paper, according to customer complaints.

“Bought it once and it irritated my skin so much,” commented one shopper, to which another responded, “[It’s] terrible mushy quality.”

“Kirkland brand is so dusty!” said someone else.

One person joked about the toilet paper’s dusty remnants: “It makes my bathroom look like a careless [drug] dealer set up shop”
