In many ways, spring is the season of anticipation: Flowers are starting to bloom, the weather is beginning to warm back up…and there’s a lot of great new content to stream! Netflix is bursting into April with a slew of must-see programming that will keep you hitting “play next” all month long. From modern Westerns to gripping medical dramas, there’s more than enough to justify some binge sessions. Here are some of the new Netflix shows we think everyone will be watching this April.
1 | Ransom Canyon (April 17)
Netflix
Long-time fans of Yellowstone are still coming to terms with their favorite show coming to a close. Fortunately, anyone looking to fill the modern Western void in their viewing schedules will have something to look forward to with Ransom Canyon.
Starring Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, and Josh Brolin, this saga based on the popular book series by Jodi Thomas follows three ranching dynasty families (sound familiar?) in Texas as they handle drama and competition amongst themselves. But even if you’re more of a fan of the classics or looking for a love story, there’s still probably something for you here.
“I wanted to do something that felt big and escapist and had the romance, but also had the drama, and the mystery wrapped up in one package,” creator, writer, and executive producer April Blair told Tudum. “Old Westerns did have a romance and drama to them, so it leans into a more bygone era Western.”
2 | Pulse (April 3)
Netflix
Medical dramas have never really gone out of style, but it truly feels like the genre is having a bit of a resurgent moment (we’re looking at you specifically, The Pitt). This month, Netflix is throwing their hat in the ring with Pulse, a brand new series that follows medical resident Danielle “Danny” Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) as she navigates her burgeoning career and keeps up with the fast pace of the Miami emergency room where she works.
As you might expect, it’s not just the trauma cases that come through the doors that keeps Danny on her toes. In this case, there are complications stemming from a budding romance with her supervisor, Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell), as well as the bonds that form between medical staff—all of which tie into the creators’ aim of creating fallible and relatable characters.
“We wanted these characters to be real people who have to go through the relatable issues of working together in a pressure cooker,” Zoe Robyn, the show’s head writer, told Tudum. “Relationships are forming and breaking apart on Pulse.”
3 | Black Mirror: Season seven (April 10)
Netflix
For 14 years, Black Mirror has helped to redefine sci-fi with its unsettling tech-dystopia vignettes (including its own “pick your own adventure” installment). Now, the show is back with six more episodes that bring the long-running series into new territory.
“You can expect a mix of genres and styles,” Charlie Brooker, the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer, said during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week last September, per Tudum. “We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional.”
Besides all new topics, fans can also expect a rare follow-up episode that expands on the classic “USS Callister” storyline from three seasons prior. And as usual, expect a star-studded cast that includes heavy hitters like Rashida Jones, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Peter Capaldi, and Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti.
4 | Chef’s Table: Legends (April 28)
Netflix
If you’ve enjoyed the viewing feast that Chef’s Table has provided over the years, prepare yourself for a veritable buffet.
The James Beard award-winning and Emmy-nominated documentary series is coming back with even more treats for the culinarily obsessed. However, this time, the focus will be split across four icons from the hospitality industry: Jamie Oliver, José Andres, Thomas Keller, and Alice Waters.
Expect to learn about everything from how their careers began to what fuels their inspiration to this day. Just be sure to prepare your appetite for when all four episodes start streaming on April 28.
5 | Love on the Spectrum: Season three (April 2)
Netflix
Let’s be honest: Reality dating shows aren’t usually much more than a guilty pleasure. But thanks to Love on the Spectrum, fans have found an entirely new heartwarming way to get their fix of budding romance.
The upcoming third season of the Emmy Award-winning series will see plenty of familiar faces alongside some new singles who are just getting into the world of dating for people on the autism spectrum. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait very long: All seven episodes will be available to stream right as April kicks off.
