Following the release of its incredible first trailer in December 2024, 28 Years Later, already a highly-anticipated continuation of the acclaimed zombie franchise, became one of the most buzz-worthy films of the upcoming year among movie fans. Part of that hype certainly came from a brief glimpse of revered Academy Award-nominated actor Ralph Fiennes looking particularly terrifying as a character named Dr. Kelson, a survivor of the outbreak.
Speaking to writer Alex Garland, who penned both the first two and the two upcoming 28 films, ahead of the released of his latest directorial effort Warfare — which he co-directed with former Navy SEAL and Iraq war vet Ray Mendoza — BroBible asked the acclaimed writer and director what fans can expect from Ralph Fiennes, fresh off an Oscar nomination for Conclave, in 28 Years Later.
Although only in the trailer for a couple of frame, Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson appears to be either overseeing/passing through the Bone Temple, which is the subtitle of the next movie in a planned 28 Years Later trilogy.
“The thing about 28 [Years Later], these films that have been directed by Danny Boyle and Nia DaCosta, are very drama-heavy at time,” Garland explained.
“So they function as horror movies, they’re within that genre, but there’s also a lot of drama, and what someone like Ralph Fiennes does is just pick up whatever you are putting in front of him and elevate it. It’s what you expect from Ralph Fiennes — it’s a very good performance from a very good actor.” (the full interview below has been queued up to begin at the 28 Years Later question)
28 Years Later, hitting theaters on June 20, 2025, will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, Edvin Ryding, and Cillian Murphy. Check out the official trailer for the film, which will then be followed up by the DaCosta-directed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in January 2026, below.
As for Garland’s newest film, Warfare, that hits theaters on Friday, April 11. The film features a star-studded cast of up-and-coming actors such as D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, and Charles Melton.
The film is a unique entry into war movie cannon, as it essentially recreates writer/director Ray Mendoza’s experiences from the Iraq war from memory and drops the audience into the middle of it. Check out the official trailer for Warfare below.
