In a perfect world, our pets could accompany us everywhere we go. But as the ASPCA explains, grocery stores must abide by state and local laws that often forbid pets from entering “since food is being handled, made, and stored” and “an animal in the store could pose a problem with sanitation.” (This doesn’t apply to service animals, who are the exception to the rule.) Fortunately, some retailers do welcome four-legged pets with open arms. Keep reading for a list of all the dog-friendly stores.

Dog-friendly stores
Home improvement and outdoor stores
With their wide aisles and indoor-outdoor display areas, most home improvement chains are pet-friendly. However, remember that stores like these expose your pets to potential choking hazards or toxic items, including plants. If your dog likes to eat everything in sight, it might be best to keep it at home.

Clothing stores
We totally get it—How can you confidently purchase a date night outfit without your pup’s bark of approval? While some clothing retailers have a strict no-pet policy, others leave it up to the discretion of the store manager/location. To avoid a snafu, call the store beforehand to double-check if your pet is allowed. Some might enforce specific rules (i.e. your pet must be in a carrying bag or wearing a muzzle).

Miscellaneous stores
Speciality retailers and technology stores allow pets in some instances. In the case of Barnes & Noble, locations with a café may not permit pets because it could break health violations. But again, your safest bet is to call the exact location you plan on visiting and ask whether their address has any reservations against pets.
