Movie stars are kind of like chicken tenders: Even one is great, but the more, the merrier. Still, there’s an art to the ensemble cast. You can’t just throw a bunch of movie stars together all higgledy-piggledy — you have to make sure they play well off each other, don’t step on each other’s toes. Failing that, you can spread them out, but there’s a formula to that, too.
“When I think of this question, I always return to True Romance, which has almost every member of the ensemble come out of nowhere, leave an indelible mark on the film, and then disappear, always driving the plot forward, where each character is a brilliant roadside attraction on the journey towards the climax,” Redditor Paracortex told r/Movies.
“Brad Pitt’s Floyd, despite only like a minute of screen time, was just as memorable to me as Gary Oldman’s Drexl, or Dennis Hopper’s and Christopher Walken’s iconic Sicilian scene. Even the production was ensemble, being written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott.”
They then asked, “What do you think is one of the best all-time ensemble cast movies?” and their fellow Redditors came together to form their own ensemble to provide some answers.
