21 Movies You Didn’t Realize Were Dark as Hell

Listen, not every movie has to be a lighthearted romp. In the age of post-grittyism, audiences are clamoring for something, anything to take their minds off the relentless horrors of daily life, but that doesn’t mean filmmakers have to give it to them. Artistic integrity above all, including humanity’s collective well-being.

We do, however, require the lighthearted romps to actually be lighthearted romps. Tricking today’s traumatized moviegoer into a bleaker experience than they were prepared for is so much more heartless than the most bloodthirsty torture pornographer. We’re talking abuse, mortality and even straight-up genocide disguised as family-friendly fare.
