Even in an age when plot spoilers are treated like stray bullets, there are certain unspoken agreements between movie and moviegoer regarding what to expect when you walk into a theater. A Disney movie isn’t going to have any scenes you don’t want to watch with your parents. A Martin Scorsese joint is going to test your bladder. A Jack Black movie isn’t going to earn you any extra IQ points, but every single person watching it is going to have a good time.
So it’s quite frankly bullshit when a comedy, kids movie or even regular old thriller pours on the nightmare fuel without warning. At least going into a Blumhouse production, you know there’s going to be grisly death, grotesque creatures and existential terror; nobody wants that in their blockbusters. Yet Hollywood insists on putting those pickles in their peanut butter. That’s why Redditor bellathehellgirl asked r/AskReddit, “What movie scares the hell outta you that isn’t a horror movie at all?” and Reddit had plenty of cinematic beef to air out.
