A good ending is crucial to a good movie. Sure, they could just cut to black as soon as the main action has ended, but we tend to be little babies about wrapping things up neatly. If we’re not gently brought back down to a satisfying conclusion, we get cranky.
Conversely, a bad ending can nullify anything good that came before it. That can be literally true in the sense that it can prove that nothing that happened in the previous two hours mattered, or it can just make you feel so gross that all of your heretofore good feelings are nothing but a distant memory.
